Sometimes I think I could write a blog entirely on our adventures in home improvement. Last November, we surpassed the 1 year point of home ownership. Some of the projects we've completed during that time include:

Installing a new sump pump line
Completely redoing our backyard (this could be multiple blog posts)
Installing a fence along the backside of our property
Carpet installation
Sealing of lower level floor vents
Painting multiple rooms
Refinishing closets
Selecting new appliances
Installing a new entry way door
My stairwell railing (bonus points for recency)

And I'm sure there are more projects I'm forgetting here. I've decided to occasionally start blogging again and share some interesting home improvement experiences. My hope is that some new homeowner might benefit from my learnings....or laugh at my learnings.

I'll start with our most recent project, which is still in progress. The new stairwell railing. Our home was built in 1976, therefore the stairwell railing was a now-unsafe wrought-iron railing. If my memory serves correct, it was one of the first things I dubbed "that's gotta go" upon first entering our home. Well, 15 months later it's gone!

What makes this once fabulous wrought-iron railing unsafe.....it is shorter than 36 inches and the spacing between the ballisters is greater than 4 inches. In other terms, a baby's head can fit through it. With our second round of new carpet coming through it was time to redo the railing.

We opted to use stain instead of paint for our railing. While it looks great, it takes time, space, patience and the ability to hang the ballisters for easy staining and varnishing. Our ballisters were hung on sheets of plywood attached to saw horses and the work bench. Each coat of stain took 24 hours to dry, followed by 3 coats of varnish (2-3 minimum dry time in-between coat), then 24 hours to dry after the final coat.

The most important thing I learned was ballisters will not all be the same size! We started with 36 inch ballisters for the entire project. However, the back ballister for each stair needs to be taller, due to the angle of the railing. Therefore, we also needed 39 inch ballisters for each step.

Although, they are completely full of it when they say this is a "simple project". And I'm not the only person who thinks this.....during a Home Depot run for supplies, a friendly Home Depot Handyman stopped by and gave us the look of "you aren't doing that yourselves are you?" (note: we are familiar with this look from home improvement stores & neighbors) He mentioned to us redoing a railing is the second most difficult DIY project behind Crown Molding. Well fortunately, we won't ever be installing Crown Molding, so after this project it'll only get easier, right?

After the railing is complete, I'll give a final update on the project and hopefully I will continue to share my adventures. Maybe someday I'll share my adventures in concrete selection!

Small Town Girl

So during the past week I have learned how small town I truly am. For work I spent 2 days at the Magic show in Vegas, where I saw some real fashion, which will unlikely hit the Midwest with the same vengeance. Furthermore once it hits GR it would be even more subdued. The sheer lace pants....don't work in the winter wonderland. Plunging necklines....I'm pretty sure that is office out of control around here. Leather harness accessories....not in Republican range of Michigan. Now, I have never been a slave to fashion, but that was reinforced at the show. My wardrobe consists of utilitarian basics, with an occasional fashion fundamental from Rue La La.

Now my small town lifestyle was further confirmed in LA. The car pool lane was the highlight of my driving experience; which consisted of driving through East LA, Inglewood, and South Central LA, among other areas. All far more interesting and diverse than Southwest Michigan. Note: when I say driving through these neighborhoods, I don't mean passing by on the highway. Each neighborhood was unique, interesting and distinctive; unlike most of my home turf - Southwest Michigan.

My default saying for anything new and interesting is "Wow, that is so cool." Yes, I'm working on expanding that into something more verbose, professional or adult-like. If I had been recording myself (which obviously, I don't) it would be truly embarrassing.

This was the first time I really started to see the difference between Midwest conservatism and West Coast cool. My pedestrian style wouldn't last a minute among the California chic. I'm relatively sure I could never cut it as a "California Girl" (thank you Katy Perry). While I might be "Fine, Fresh, and Fierce" in my own mind. There are a few things I don't want "Sun-kissed skin, so hot" (we call that skin cancer prone here), "Sand in my stilettos" (I'm a flats kinda girl), "Toned, tan, fit and ready" (Okay, I'm working on the toned and fit part - but keep in mind we have 4 months of darkness & cold). I'm still working on my own version called "Michigan Girl" thank goodness for Journey or we would have nothing. Since Katy had Snoop and Alicia had Jay-Z, I assume Eminem will make himself available for my "Michigan Girl" anthem, if needed I'll take Kid Rock though.

The land of social

As social media continues to dominate the modern world, I feel like I'm falling behind....Google has yet to realize I'm a great candidate for Google + and I only actively use Facebook. This blog isn't really active (hence my non-exist following) and I only use Twitter to track interesting brands and Packers players......so no I won't fess up my handle.

Wouldn't it be great to know what will be the biggest social tool in 10 years? Obviously, because then I could retire early and live in la la land (which may or may not include a house account with Rue La La).

It almost seems like just keeping up with all the social media is a full-time job. And I don't mean the folks who truly work in social media for a living.....monitoring corporate twitter handles, pushing new facebook content, etc. I mean just to be up-to-date in the social-verse for your own personal use, it is practically a full-time job. Who has time to share all their life events on multiple forums, while checking-in everywhere they go and following all their friends and family? Serious overload. Plus my life is so uninteresting I wouldn't have that much interesting information to share. Where did the idea of everything is good in moderation go? In the world of over-sharing and under-privacy there seems to be no moderation.

Maybe I'm just bitter Google won't allow me into Google + yet or maybe I feel like in 2004 my social presence was so cool. Back when it was thefacebook.com. However, now my social media presence is pedestrian and lacking because I still have that same facebook account with limited other social media accounts.

Groupon Where Are You?

Since way back before Groupon was a daily deal phenom and every city was clamoring for their own personalized daily deals, I've been a fan/user. This was back when the only city to have Groupon was Chicago and I was a resident (albeit very short-term). Of course, like all cities Groupon now exists in Grand Rapids, which is great because occasionally I purchase restaurant deals being a frugalista. However, recently I stepped out of my typical purchasing behavior and purchased a pressure washing Groupon.

Yes, that's correct....a pressure washing Groupon. Ah, the joys of being domesticated....no longer do a crave the Rue La La flash sales (okay, I still can't pass up the final sales) but its the homeowner Groupons that win me over.

While Groupon had until now never failed me....it finally did with the pressure washing Groupon. I assume there are Groupon sales reps out there, and the GR Groupon rep screwed up with the pressure washing Groupon. I'm pretty sure the company is a complete scam since their voicemail offers pressure washing and tax prep services....right, because I want my tax accountant to come and wash my siding. After multiple voicemails and emails, no one has responded to my request for an appointment. Therefore I assume it could potentially be a scam and I'm disappointed Groupon would partner with such a company. Guess I'll stick to the restaurant Groupons.

So after reading Born To Run a few months ago and attempting to be an "in the know" runner I've been interested in all the minimalist and barefoot running buzz. Can it truly cure runners knee? Because after weeks of physical therapy during my marathon training, I still couldn't walk right for a few days following the Bayshore. So is running barefoot (or in minimalist shoes) truly going to cure all my running aliments? In January I even attended a Good Form Running class, which helped me determine I heel-strike; however, the difficult part was correcting the form. Since it was winter at the time I would run on the treadmill, which was prefect time to run barefoot. Although I didn't feel that my running form was changing significantly during my barefoot treadmill runs. However, I'm still fully committed to improving my running form...a perfectly healthy 25-year old should be able to run & run & run & run without any knee pain whatsoever.

Of course, I'd seen, read and heard about the Vibram FiveFingers; however, there was no way I was going to commit to the shoes (which are not cheap) without knowing whether barefoot/minimalist shoes were for me. Over the past several months I've decided the Merrell Pace Glove would be the perfect mesh for me, designed with minimal support and sole, but still lace up similar to a "traditional" running shoe. So they combine what I'm interested in with FiveFingers with my "traditional" running shoe (Mizuno Wave Alchemys)? We will see, I'm planning to finally purchase a pair in the short-term future and put them to the test. Obviously going through the appropriate wear-in/break-in phase. Can they cure my runner's knee and put me on track for half marathons in the fall or the Green Bay marathon next year.....or sometime in the future. Bring it.

Project Time

Since becoming homeowners last November we've learned all about the many joys of home ownership. One of the projects we've seen fully completed was the "blue room" or my "project room". Dubbed the "blue room" for the blue carpet (as hideous as it sounds). Below is the room pre-project. White walls with multiple holes filled in, blue carpet, and outdated white kiddy ceiling fan.

We decided to keep the room bright and opted for a blue/gray color on the wall, remove the blue carpet and replace it with brown carpet, and a new ceiling fan.

One project down and several to go; however, we are well on our way. Next on the list is the living and dining room area, for which we just finalized the color scheme. Light tan/khaki with sage as the accent wall.

Also making progress all my hand-planted bulbs are preparing to bloom any day now! My expectations were they would bloom sometime in August, so any day now would be perfectly aligned with my expectations.

Murphy's Law in Action

Ever feel like the adage "anything that can go wrong will go wrong" can be so accurate it is almost depressing? Or the spin-off of Murphy's Law "give the most inappropriate time for something to go wrong, that's when it will occur."

Well last week ....as our ceiling began to fall, I sure felt like whoever Murphy's law is named after was proud of his gremlins and the giggled watching his law flip my week upside down. Now, the ceilling situation alone was a dilemma; however, it was compounded by the fact that my partner in home ownership and life was OOT (out.of.town!) not only him, but everyone at the top of my emergency phone list chain of command (Ryan, my dad, his dad). All 3 were enjoying vacation, while I'm trapped with my collapsing ceiling. It sounds highly dramatic, but at the time is was a bit concerning.

Once I learned the first order of business was to prop the ceiling with 2x4's it led to more dilemmas.

2x4's inside a Prius, that's a joke, right?
Me, sawing 2x4's to the appropriate length, that's a farce, right? I'm not even trusted to cut vegetables.
Propping the appropriately sized 2x4's to support the ceiling until a contractor and permanent fix are decided upon. Wait, am I candid camera, in my own home?

Luckily, I convinced a contractor to come and setup props to hold the ceiling temporarily (phew!). So what caused the ceiling to collapse? Laminate ceilings....note if you ever look at a home built in the mid-1970's - are the ceilings laminate ceilings?

In the long-run, we now have a contractor setup to come permanently fix the ceilings (throughout our home) and my better half is now back from vacation.

Cool Things In GR

Since I've lived in GR (Grand Rapids for those non-Michiganders) for 9-months now, I'm almost an official Grand Rapidian (yes, that is a real term). I've noticed Grand Rapids tries really hard to be really cool, and since I'm really nerdy, it is cool enough for me. There a few things I strongly believe GR has going for it: several colleges in town, several large medical facilities, close proximity to Lake Michigan, good restaurants, several trails for hiking, running, walking, cycling, etc., summer festivals, and because of that there is a relatively large population of outdoor enthusiasts, compared to other Michigan cities. Note: we are not comparing ourselves to Denver, California or other typically uber-outdoorsy locations; only other Michigan cities.

What are my favorite things about GR? Several items listed above.....trails, relatively dog-friendly (at least my neighborhood), good shopping (mix of typical chain stores and local boutiques), and a solid base for runners (driven by places like Gazelle's and Metro Health).

So what made me attribute a whole blog to my love of GR....well that solid base of runners decided to organize a fundraiser for Joplin, MO - which I think is awesome. Instead of collecting registration fees, everything will be donated to Joplin's local United Way. So on June 26, hopefully a huge group of people will be ready to run, walk and raise money for Joplin, which doesn't get any better.

This race alone could be a reason people in Grand Rapids are cool. Of course, this won't be the only city organizing a Benefit for Boomtown, but I'm very happy to live in town with one.

Success

Do you ever wonder what success feels like? What its like to be livin' the dream? Well I wonder about both sometimes....and I definitely can't say I've experienced the latter (other than sarcastically, of course); however, last weekend I experienced the former. I completed my first marathon....not a half (that was done in March).....but a FULL marathon. Yes, 26.2 miles or 138,336 feet. I can officially proudly display the 26.2 bumper sticker on my Prius, rock the marathon shirt (and socks!), and confidently run any distance less than a marathon forever.

Was I fast? No....5:01:35 was how long it took me to complete my marathon. I had to stop and pee 4 TIMES! Which is just ridiculous! My goal was sub-5 hours, but all my damn pee stops screwed me.

A good question....where do I go from here? An ultra....hell no. A tri.....maybe, although that requires a higher level of up-front capital.....new road bike, tri suit. Although I do enjoy all 3 sports....I swam before I ran and technically, I probably biked before I swam. However, my old Schwinn with the basket on the front is not designed for racing. For now, I'll stick with running - maybe I'll do a half again this fall and some 10K's this summer. After a marathon I can do anything, right?

So success feels like your legs can't possibly move any further and the final mile is the longest mile you've ever run. Lucky for me, I never hit a wall....thanks to my sport beans (huge fan), eating carbs for 4 solid days ahead of time (yes, all carbs), and consuming a generous amount of gatorade (probably did not help the multiple pee stops). At the end I proudly rocked my medal, despite being uber slow. I now have a starting point and maybe someday I'll record a better time. Just looking for a training partner this time. Any takers?

My oh my, its been such a long time blog. Now that I have no followers I can write whatever I want knowing that it is highly unlikely to be read by anyone.

Then I can officially announce on my blog I am running my first marathon in 6 days.....6 DAYS! While almost anyone I'm close with knew about this day a long time ago.....I didn't share it with the greater world.

I've been registered for the marathon since December 6, 2010. I've been training since November 2010 and officially since January. Why did I decide to register? Another bucket list item that will hopefully be completed next Saturday morning/early afternoon. This year I turned 25....which means, I am getting old.....now I have to round up to 30......I'm in the box marked 25-29.....I'm not getting any younger so it would only get more difficult to run a marathon with age.

I ran all winter (often outdoors) in my thermal gear and spike tracks for my shoes and now summer is quickly approaching and I'm crossing my fingers for cooler weather next weekend.

Do I have a goal time? Hell no.....unlike some of my runner friends, I'm simply a person who pretends to be a runner....a wanna be runner. Therefore, my goal is simply to finish under 6 hours....why 6 hours, well the finish line closes at 6 hours, and I want that damn finishers medal.

The course (Traverse City Bayshore) is supposed to be flat & fast - therefore I fully expect to be the last person to finish. Maybe I should have picked a race that wasn't a speed marathon? Oh well, this one fit my time requirements - close to my 25th birthday. The Kalamazoo Marathon wasn't announced yet, so that one didn't work. Of course, I only recently learned about the Green Bay Marathon, which yes, means if I survive this race in 6 days, I'll be considering the Green Bay Marathon at some point in my life.

Another question I've been asked recently: Are you prepared? Dumb question, let's see no I just figured I could run 26.2 miles after sitting on my ass all winter. DUH! No, I've been running all fall, winter and spring. Easily completing my first 1/2 marathon, a 25K, and a few other races along the way. My longest run-to-date....20 miles.....only a 10K more would complete the marathon.

And how am I feeling? One word, nervous. Why? I expect myself to finish, my family expects me to finish (hell, they are waking up at 5 AM next Saturday to come spend 6 hours watching me run), people know I'm running this race and think I can finish, the lady who sold me my new running shoes in January at Gazelles gave me that look like no way, honey - and of course, I must prove her wrong, all the weeks I went to PT to build up my knee strength better pay off for something. Therefore, failure is not an option. Its 26.2 or bust.

My reward when I finish? Well, when I originally registered it was getting my registration fees back from Ryan....however, with all the money I've spent on gear, other race fees, etc. It's kind of a moot point now. My real reward is the 26.2 car magnet that will be prominently placed on the back of my Prius....or the fact that proving if you push yourself, you can do things you never imagined possible......

Antique Market Find

Occasionally I troll antique markets looking for something I "need" that some old person owns. I realize I'm stereotyping the average antique market seller as old - but have you ever been to an antique market? If not, they are 90% of the time old/retired folks selling items. Now, I have no issues with them, personally I find antique markets entertaining and could care less who is selling their goods. Honestly at least someone out there is willing to keep me entertained by unique, sometimes moldy smelling goods.

Last week during one of my many weekends spent in St. Joe I went to check out Antiques on The Bluff. First, I'm glad it's a dog-friendly market otherwise I would be unable to support it. Lake Orion has a non-dog-friendly farmers market, of which I do not support. Overall, I thought Antiques on The Bluff was impressive. I'm sure it was one it's biggest weekends, being Labor Day Weekend and all. My one lovely purchase was the great fleur de lis pitcher above. I love anything with French ties so of course, I love anything with the French royal symbol of fleur de lis.

As an experienced market shopper I first look through the whole market to make sure there isn't anything more worth my money. After trolling the entire market I realize the only thing I "need" is the pitcher and return back to purchase it. After negotiating the price with the seller he asks why the Boy Scouts pitcher is appealing. I inform him the pitcher isn't a Boy Scouts pitcher, simply fleur de lis are on the pitcher. Yes, the boy scouts use this symbol but I'm pretty sure French royalty were around before Billy and his Boy Scouts. Clearly his knowledge of his goods was lacking. Anywho, the pitcher is clearly now is a better home where it's symbolism is more appreciated.

TJ Maxx Adventures

The older I get the more deal-focused I become. Recently (by recent I mean within the past year) I've become addicted to the clearance sections of Nordstrom's Rack and TJ Maxx. Overall, I enjoy these stores no matter what, and Ryan can attest I'll spend hours trolling the racks looking for deals. Sometimes when I'm bored I'll just troll around looking for deals. Today I went to TJ Maxx searching for a reusable wine tote, similar to the Built totes, to no avail, only lunch pails to be had.

But I wasn't disappointed instead I scored a pencil holder for my desk on clearance for $3 and it's cute. I strongly considered purchasing a Gaiam yoga mat tote bag on clearance for $3, but then realized I already have a tote that can also carry my yoga block thus the mat-only bag is useless. Other products in consideration from the TJ's clearance rack: 2 red doggie dishes with dog prints for $3/piece. My willpower won here as Jillie's current dish works fine and I couldn't tell if they were dog prints or cat prints. Whenever I need party gifts or prize gifts my first stop is the TJ's clearance area, for a recent party I scored a candle, a bath/body set, and a stationary set all for $3-$4/each. Considering they were all cute and/or smelled nice that was a win in my book. My key to gift giving is to always make my money so as far as possible and get the most for my money. How appropriate that the Rue La La Final Sale is today & tomorrow.......

Ma Vie Dans La D

Translation: My Life in The D. I feel like that sounds so much cooler than it really is.....ah, life.

In the past 2+ years I've lived in many cities. 2 major ones at that. From Kalamazoo to Chicago to Portage to Lake Orion. I like to think I'm a classy nomad. In each city I live in I try to find cool things to do (easy in Chicago - difficult in Portage). For example, if there is a farmer's market nearby you can bet I know about it, and these days if it's dog-friendly you can bet I visit.

In Chicago, my favorite market was the Randolph Street Market - if you haven't been I highly reccomend it. I scored a gorgeous antique clutch - that later became my wedding day bag. I missed out on an adorable popcorn bowl set that I still look for today (damn it!). In Portage, I was a weekly patron of the Chesteron Farmer's Market (still the best farmer's market to-date, there is a cheese shop that I still order from via online) and the Portage Farmer's Market (in Portage I rode my bike with basket & all to stock-up). Which brings me to Lake Orion and The D, my two best events so far: The Eastern Market and the Pontiac Silverdome Drive-in. Eastern Market was great - I scored 2 hanging baskets for $5 and some great deals on produce. No vegetarian can pass that up. The Drive-in was great because a. it's dog-friendly! b. what's not to love about a Drive-in. However, my biggest mistake with the drive-in was not bringing my own food....rookie mistake! Next time, I'm bringing lots of my own snacks and a cooler for my bevs.

Hopefully more fun events in the D to come, those are just my 2 favorite thus far.

The Bachelorette

This season I've gone again started watching crap TV.....hey, there isn't much on during the summer months! The Bachelorette has reeled me in as their precious viewing bait. Sad, but true. Every Monday night I sit in front of my TV wondering just who Ali will choose....Frank, Roberto or Chris (because lets be real those are the top 3). I'll tell you what's going to happen because I am an excellent facial expression reviewer. Ali LOVES Frank, but Frank like many American men has commitment issues. It's an age old issue Ali, just deal with it. And Frank, did you really think going on a reality dating show would help you get over your commitment issues? Next, Roberto let's be honest here Ali just wants to hook-up with Roberto, one & done. Classic. Chris has the true husband potential, however he's from the Northeast and she's from the West Coast, done & done, not gonna happen. Overall, great casting Chris Harrison & ABC. Looks like Trista & Ryan are still your only fairy tale story.

Last night was probably the most entertaining, Justin's voicemails....priceless. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Shouldn't have screwed your girlfriend over TWICE!

Ah, it's the small things in life that entertain me....like reality TV...life at it's classiest.

Am I Invisible?

Last night I was getting dinner at the local Panera Bread (let's be honest I'm no cook). I place my order and patiently wait at the pick-up area for my dinner. No one else is around at the time and the two "Panera Professionals" were supposed to be making my sandwich and instead they were slightly screwing around. Not that I truly cared honestly I was in no rush, it was a Wednesday night after all. However, after about 5 minutes a couple walks up to the waiting are and are told by the "Panera Professionals" there food will be ready in just a minute. Wait what about me, I've already been waiting?! This was the first sign I was invisible. Then after 2 minutes more the "Panera Professional" tries to hand my food to the female half of this couple!! This was a turning point for me where I learned that I truly am invisible.

Blog Blackout

I know I've been MIA in the blogging world for 2 months! That's craziness....how are all my old friends and co-workers supposed to keep up-to-date on my life without my blog. Well have no fear wedding season is here. And boy, will I have lots to blog about. I'm in 3 weddings this summer and last weekend was the start of a long wedding season to come. My dear friend Angie had her bridal shower last weekend or I should say I hosted it! That's right the hostess with the mostest...c'est moi!

During my 2-month blogging hiatus Jillie graduated from intermediate dog class and is now a dogcamp regular boss. She was also attacked by a bitchy Shiba Inu at the park. Jillie is sort of a wimp or princess, as I like to think. Basically she's not guard dog hence my desire for a second canine companion with guard dog qualities. I'm voting for a doberman. Better than Brinks, because it will kill a burglar.

Prius Test Drive #3

I consider myself a bargain-hunter/shopper and I am no different when it comes to buying a car. If I could go to an auto auction I would but I know nothing about cars so that wouldn't be of any use to me. I've been closely watching Autotrader to scope out the stock and today I found a decently priced Prius from some import dealer. After a bit of searching I became slightly worried it was a place run by the Russian mafia. Trying to not be judgmental I figured I would give the place a fair shot.

Well I show up and go into the front door (which was unlocked) and no one is around. After a few "hellos" and thinking to myself this is how all horror movies start (dark, rainy, shady looking building, with no one around) I return to my car. I figure I should at least drive around back and scope things out, I pull up and it appears this is where some cars go to die or maybe be revived as many were new but wrecked. Again with the Hitchcock music playing in my head I continue my auto adventure. I walk into the garage again with the "hellos" and the first Russian greets me (doesn't speak English) I attempt to explain I'm there to look at a Prius I saw online. He leaves and out comes the boss, who speaks English. I explain why I am there again and he then disappears to get the keys and comes back with the keys and a battery starter....wait, so you're telling me the car doesn't start? This is the first thing that comes to mind. Well no, the car parked behind it wouldn't start. Anyways the car looked nice but I'm not confident it would be the smartest place to purchase a vehicle....

And my search continues tomorrow with some Toyota dealership in Clinton Township..

Need: New Whip

Last week I took my Alleycat aka Oldsmobile Alero (2001 edition - classic) to the shop for a "routine" check-up. Only to find out she needs $990 worth of repairs and soon. She is leaking coolant into the oil pan....grrrrreat. Well as you can imagine my current whip is worth about about the same amount as those repairs so that's a no-go. As of last Thursday I am currently in the car market. Some whips in contention (please stop reading now if you are an American car only kinda person)

Toyota Prius (duh, what car matches my personality better than a Prius). Potential concerns: does it drive well in the snow? I've heard repairs are expensive and batteries need to be replaced often. Has the whole recall issue, has it been fixed?
Hyundai Sonata. Went to drive a Mazada 6 and saw this car and decided to drive it. Solid whip, solid price, Ryan loves it. Gas mileage is mediocre as this is a full-size sedan.
All compact cars and SUV's are ruled out
The only potential GM car in contention is the Malibu which isn't that appealing

Today I went to test drive a Prius and the salesman was horrible. Knew nothing about the car - I was basically selling the car to myself....horrible and disappointing. My search continues but who knew car shopping sucked so bad.

Dog Daycamp Week 3!

Jillie will be starting week 3 at Petsmart Doggie Daycamp this week! She goes once a week and spends the entire day at camp. The first week I was really nervous, maybe she wouldn't make friends, what if the other dogs didn't like here. Well no worries here, Jillie made lots of friends, as usual. Her first 2 weeks have gone well and all the employees at Daycamp know Jillie and I well now. (Probably know Jillie well and I am probably just Jillie's Mom.)

Week 1 her "pawgress report" said she made 3 new friends and week 2 she had made 5 new friends....she has to be the most popular dog in camp by now. I'm going to attribute this to her being maniac. Jillie is rarely worn-out...not after daycamp, dog parks, runs, walks, etc. Last Monday, while completing our taxes (and evidently neglecting my dog) she ate a pair of my work pants. Yes, literally ate a hole through them. Awesome. Ah, the joys of being a dog owner. At the moment, she is quitely sitting in my lap (clearly, she loves this blog post) but at a moments notice that cuteness changes into her being a maniac.

Woop woop!! I just completed our taxes for 2009. It was no small feat either, I completed our federal and 3 states (Michigan, Indiana and Illinois). Unfortunately, my least favorite state is also the state we owe money to! Damn you Hoosiers and that would happen. Now that my taxes are done I can update my followers on my most recent life adventures....

My first ticket...thank you Auburn Hills Police for solving the world's toughest crimes and making a grown woman cry on her way to work. Last week after taking my dog to her first day of daycamp I was pulled over for speeding en route to the office. All the usual attempts to get out of my ticket were epic failures....balling my eyes out, the fact that I still had an out-of-state license and was new to the area....this guy meant business. To make matters even worst my license was confiscated!! What am I a convict?! Well no, it's because I was technically from out-of-state and evidently they don't want me skipping town and not paying my ticket. Later that day I had to go post bond of $20 and get my license back....BEST.DAY.EVER. Don't worry friends more to come here in the next 1-2 months I'll be receiving my court date so I can make my plea in court. Power suit please....

Anywho life lesson learned....don't speed in Auburn Hills and don't speed when you are out of your homestate!

When Allergies Attack!

This weekend was quite eventful in the land of dogs. Jillie had an allergy attack. Yes, my poor baby got very sick and had to go the puppy ER. We don't know what caused the attack, and most likely never will. For the next time we are armed with meds, in case of a puppy emergency.

I had never seen an allergic reaction in a dog before, but right away I knew that's what was happening. How can an 11-pound dog get so sick and swollen so fast, only one thing, a severe allergic reaction. Since we were out-of-town it was doubly difficult, as we couldn't contact Jillie's regular vet. We called literally every vet office in Southwest Michigan to find someone who would treat our dog on a Saturday night. Finally we got ahold of Dr. Ed in St. Joe, who paused spending time with his kids to come and rescue my kid. First, we gave Jillie a 25 mg Benadyrl for the ride to the vet. This helped stop the swelling increase (at this point Jillie looked like a Basset Hound). At the vet Jillie was given a shot to reduce the swelling, itching and vomiting. We were given pills in case this ever happened again. Like an ever-ready mom they now get prominent positioning my purse, which is always with me.

Why do I share this story with my 5-10 followers. To let you know all know what a puppy allergic reaction looks like and how to treat it....immediately give your dog a Benadyrl and call the ER vet.

Turbo Tax Adventures

It is looming on the loved/hated tax season. Some people love it because they get large returns, some people hate it because they owe the taxman money. I'm indifferent, but I hope for a big tax return....new shoes, jeans, sweaters or that new parka I've been dreaming of...well a girl can dream. Most likely my tax return would buy my dear dog Jillie for new toys & treats.

Ryan and I are advocates of Turbo Tax and this year we upgraded to Turbo Tax Deluxe (I'm hoping for a bigger return as a result). Retail value of Turbo Tax Deluxe was $59.99, but being the bargain shopper I scored it at $39.99. Thank you Office Depot, for price matching the lowest found price. Saving money is like getting something for free, it's a win-win, win for the company because I bought their stuff, and a win for me because I saved money.

There is an indoor outlet mall near my house, yes it is problematic. Last time I was shopping there at the Off Saks Fifth Ave (yes, as great as it sounds) I signed up for their loyalty card. (Yes, I own many loyalty cards.) In my email last week I received a 25% off entire purchase. Now, I definitely need to hurry back before the coupon expires. I just can't pass up a good sale, never have been able to and never will.

Palazzo Di Bocce

Down the street from my house there is this massive Italian-inspired building with an LED sign outside always advertising their current dining specials. I kept wondering what is in that building because it's too big to just be food. The the title says it all it's a Bocce Ball Palace. Amazing....seriously, amazing. Oh the things you'll find in Lake Orion. We have yet to visit but obviously it's high on my priority list now.

Dogwalker Search

Yesterday was my first official dogwalker interview, and boy was it interesting. Through care.com I've had about 20 applicants to walk Jillie. My first interviewee had a nice profile, dog sitting experience and seemed legit. However, her profile went over much better than she did in-person....waa waa....so my dogwalker search continues.

This Friday I won't be able to let Jillie out during lunch so she is going to Doggie Daycare at PetSmart. I think she'll do well there, small dogs are separated from the big dogs, which is good because she is scared of big dogs. If doggie daycare goes well I might opt for that against a dogwalker unless my search improves. I emailed a few applicants back, we'll see how that goes.

Yesterday, we had a quick vet trip and Dr. Corey informed me that Jillie is probably part Italian Greyhound, which is far more interesting than a Rat Terrier (well, interesting sounding). After doing some research on Italian Greyhounds, I can definitely see that in my Jillie. Typically, they are very cat-like in nature and want to be lap dogs....Jillie covers all these....although she is a selective lap dog....she has LOTS of energy. They can also run up-to 25 miles/hour, and let me tell you...Jillie can run fast. I wouldn't clock her in at 25 miles/hour but she also isn't a purebred Italian Greyhound. They typically weigh 8 - 18 pounds whereas a Beagle weighs between 18 and 30 pounds. This could account for Jillie weighing in at 11 pounds.

Somewhere in her DNA is a mix of a few different doggies, but they all make one cute little doggie for me.

Doggie Weekend

Last weekend my sister and Kraig came to visit with Linus (their mini dachshund) and it was Jillie's first weekend with visitors in the house. Luckily, it was a success and Jillie made a new doggie BFF. The video is one of their many wrestle fests. I was really proud of Jillie for doing so well with a new dog. She was able to even wear Linus out because she has so much energy (borderline insane). This Friday she starts doggie classes with the beginner class at PetSmart. I think she'll be the best dog in the class because I've been working on training her myself. She has been able to pick up some commands pretty quickly. Some 10-year old girls at the dog park taught her how to sit. They were doing a class project and wanted to meet Jillie, who was happy to oblige.

My current task is working on Jillie's separation anxiety, which has steadily been improving. Instead of letting her go insane when I get home from work, I make her sit and wait till she calms down before I give her attention. I also leave the TV on while I'm gone, it's my classic conditioning sign that I'll be back. I'm sure her separation anxiety will get better as we continue the routine.

We have some solid dogwalker candidates finally, one even works at the Kennel Club down the road, she's my current top-runner.

Dogwalker

Last night I began my search for a dogwalker for my new best friend Jillie or Jillie Beans. She is a 10-pound beagle/rat terrier mix (we think), we got her last Wednesday from the Humane Society and I fell in love with her instantly (as did my entire family). She is a 10-pound ball of fury. The vet thinks she is at least a years old based on her teeth. Unfortunately, no one fixed my soulmate so Thursday is a big vet trip for Jill. Last week we took her in for her Rabies shot and this week it's mircochipping, fixing, and distemper shot. Big week for lil' Jill.

Still working on getting her adjusted to her new home. I'm pretty sure her former owners had a fenced-in yard because Jillie loves to run off the leash. Fortunately, Lake Orion has a 14-acre dog park! Despite the snow and cold weather, Jillie still loves being outside and seems to love the snow.

I joined Care.com to find some potential dogwalkers, although I think it's crap I had to pay to join. Hopefully we'll find some winners on the site.

Heartbreak

Last night, my dear Packers saw their season come to an abrupt ending - far too soon. The Pack started out looking like they left the entire team in Green Bay and some imposters showed up in their jerseys. During the second half the offense showed up but the defense remained in Green Bay for the entire game. After the usually clutch Rackers missed a field goal, sending the game into overtime, I thought this was our chance. Boy was I wrong. Despite starting with the ball and giving A-Rog a chance for us to win the game he throws a pic and its overrrrrr. It hurts....real bad.

Sounds like I better cancel my catering order for the Packers vs. Saints game I was counting on....

Funny Things I Overhear

Guy on train: "We are going to play the game White Rhino at the party, you know where everyone brings a gift to exchange."
Smarter friend of guy: "Um.....do you mean White Elephant."

In case this isn't obvious, I'm easily amused. Regardless, this was hilarious White Rhino....where the hell did that come from? Maybe it was even more amusing because it reminded me of the While Elephant gift exchange my co-workers and I had last week. Some popular prizes included: a rolling crate, a used Starbucks gift card, my antiqued crock pot (which was a HIT and had been sitting at my cube since September).

This weekend I was at home to celebrate the holidays with my sister & bro-in-law, who were in town to celebrate Christmas early. I took a trip to the local mall to do some shopping and the B. Dalton is closing (Barnes & Nobles buyout) so they were having a 40% sale!! Typically, I do not buy books because I try to always get them at the library, it's part of my live green initiative. However, I never pass up a 40% off sale. I walked around the store grabbing every book I've wanted to read that I haven't yet. Then Ryan made me cut down my pile....bummer. I bought Pure by Sapphire, commonly known as the book, the movie Precious is based on. Now, I knew some back story and expected the book to be depressing. Boy was I wrong, the book is FAR more depressing than I ever imagined. I see how Monique would be nominated for every award possible for portraying the mother of Precious. I haven't even seen the movie, but based on the book that would be quite the character to portray. It's even more depressing because it's a true story. Good read and very short I read it Saturday in about 5 hours.

I realize my blog posts have been MIA lately....I'll blame the holiday busy season and sales galore for my disappearance on the blogosphere. After much delay I finally watched the movie "Julie & Julia" although I've never read the book. While I hate watching a movie without reading the book first, I'm going to guess I'm in the majority here, and many other viewers also missed the book. Perfect timing to watch the movie as well, I just heard Meryl Streep was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the movie. Then again, when isn't Meryl Streep nominated for an award with any movie she's in, now I'm a huge Meryl Streep fan, but it's true, she's an amazing actress and as a result she is always nominated. Bravo to her.

Another book turned movie I still need to watch is Precious, and it's driving me nuts that I haven't seen it yet. Another bravo to Gabby Sidibe who was also nominated for her role in the movie, her first acting gig ever! Maybe I too could be cast in a film and show off my acting prowess and be nominated for an award....doubt it.

January 15th the movie I've been waiting to see comes out...The Lovely Bones...and Stanley Tucci was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in the movie. Now, I'm pretty sure he will scare the crap out of my in the movie, and it'll be difficult for me to picture him as Mr. Harvey, because I love Stanley Tucci.

Thanksgiving Adventures

My favorite season of the year is here! That being sale season....woop woop! My holiday weekend started with a trip to Detroit to watch my Packers play. The Packers win, so I am in a great mood! Post-game we are headed back to my car, we hop it and I open the glove box to grab my parents GPS, I had borrowed and it's missing! Ah, where did it go, how did someone get in without the window being broken? Well, I soon found out someone had jimmied my driver's side door lock and stole the GPS out the glove box! From there my main question is, how did someone know it was in there? Every piece of it was completely hidden in the glove box. I'm going to attribute it to the shady parking attendants at Kentwood Academy. And to think I was helping children by parking in that lot, yeah, helping them scam me. Life lesson learned.

After that depressing event, it was back home to prep for the biggest shopping day of the year. Luckily, Best Buy had the same Garmin on-sale the next day so in addition to my Dyson, I was also in the market for a Garmin Nuvi. Awesome.

My Mom and I arrived at Kohl's at 3:30 AM, my Dad didn't feel like waking up that early. I have no idea why not?! Thank goodness, we got there so early within about a 1/2 hour of opening the entire Dyson stock was wiped clean! That fabulous low-quality picture above is my Dyson I snatched up right after opening. woop woop!

Tonight I went pre-shopping for my Dyson <3 This is similar to pre-gaming before a bar night, or big game; except it's only for die-hard shoppers - similar to me. Where does my strong desire for a Dyson vacuum come from? These are questions I do NOT have the answer to. Maybe it's that man on the TV who tells me during the commercials how great my life will be with one. Am I really that much of a sucker for advertisements? The BH Kohl's has TWO Dyson DC25's in stock!!! TWO!!! That's it! The friendly saleswoman tried to put one on hold for me, however that didn't work. She did offer to hide it behind the other vacuums for me though later tonight. Basically she is my hero.

Kohl's opens at 4 AM on Friday. I plan to arrive at 3:45 AM to stand in line and run like a crazy woman to my Dyson. Since my Dad is my vacuum wingman I've offered to buy him breakfast, a sort of bribe to wake up at 3 AM to go to Kohl's. Has anyone ever wanted a vacuum quite like I want my Dyson DC25? Not that I can recall. Determination, focus.....these are key personality traits that will get me my Dyson.

What are some other purchases I'm looking to make during one of my three favorite days of the year...Wal-Mart has heated blankets & throws on sale for $13....done and done. I LOVE heated blankets. These could also be could use at the office, as it's always about 60 degrees. At Best Buy, I will definitely be hitting up the cheap DVD bin - as always. To score some DVD's that will sit on my DVD rack unopened for the next year. Smart purchase.....no....bargain purchase.....yes!

Tomorrow I'm going to the Packers v. Lions game....WOOP WOOP! If you'll be watching for me in the stadium, I'll be rocking my Greg Jennings jersey and Pack wears in addition to my temporary facial tattoos....awesome! Two big days in a row for me....can.not.wait!

My favorite holiday

My favorite holiday is coming up....Thanksgiving....now why would Thanksgiving be the favorite holiday of a vegetarian? Well, obviously the day after is actually my favorite holiday. My Dad and I wake up early every Black Friday to shop, now I'm pretty sure he doesn't look forward to this as much as I do, but it's tradition now. This weekend I have devoted several hours in competitive research of leaked sales ads for the items that I'm willing to knock over a soccer mom at 5 AM to obtain. There are always a few stores I focus on....Kohls and Best Buy (points for originality, I know).

My search is focused on a DC25 Dyson....I want one and Ryan just doesn't understand why a Dyson versus any other brand of vacuum. It's just not the same. To prepare for this purchase I saved up my credit card points and cashed in for $150 worth of Kohl's gift cards. Clearly, I was hoping Kohl's would have the best deal on the Dyson. According to the leaked Kohl's ad my Dyson will be on sale for $399 from $549. Clearly this is a bargain. Now I'm just concerned how early I should wake up to wait in line at the local Kohl's. How many other crazy ladies (or men) are in the market for my Dyson? These are questions I need answered. How willingly will the BH Kohl's be to provide sales figures on the Dyson DC25?

The remainder of my shopping is focused on potentially replacing my household desktop computer. I almost feel like a traitor saying this as my current desktop has survived 6-years of use. My first computer purchased before I left for college freshman year. My computer has been a good friend and survived hours of usage, and many a term paper in college. It saw Facebook before Facebook was cool, and many a episode of Grey's Anatomy online. However, the time has come to look for a replacement. The sad part is today I could purchase a much more powerful, faster, etc. desktop for about a 1/3 of the price. Damn you technology.

Mad Men's season finale was last night, and in my humble opinion the show went out with a bang. I've been watching most of the season and thus far nothing terribly exciting....a secretary ran over a Brit's foot with a John Deere tractor, Don cheated on his wife a few times, Sal accidentally came out of the closet in front of Don. The season finale was great...undermining the Brits and starting their own agency, with my favorite characters....brilliant! Don finally had to admit that Roger and Peggy were all actually needed at the agency, and unfortunately the world doesn't revolve around creative. Betty is leaving Don for the somewhat older and sexy Henry, besides it's about time she leaves Don's cheating ass. Now, I'm eager beaver waiting for season 4....

Ah My TV Died!

Tonight after eating my fabulous Friday dinner of Chinese food with my boo, we sat down to watch some TV. Typical Friday night at the Paruch household. Only to be ruined when my TV died! Now this TV was a gift of sorts, we bought it after I got my first job out of school - so I guess it could be considered a post-grad self-gift. Now, I'm no TV professional but I think it's a nice TV.

However it suddenly when rainbow-colored in vertical stripes! AH! Out of nowhere....so tragic. It also made noises that sounded like an alien attempting to talk to me through the TV. I told Ryan aliens were taking over - I still think this is true.

Anyways, thank godness I have experience with bad luck, and you know I bought the extended warranty on that TV. We called it in and someone is coming to take a look on Monday - YAY!

UPDATE: My TV is home! Thank goodness we purchased the warranty plan the motherboard or something had to be replaced...value of the part alone was $300!! The doesn't even included labor to repair the TV. Bottom line....warranties are my new best friend.

Compliment or Diss

Today I was en route to catch my train and some incredibly small for his age kid stops me and starts with, "This is going to sound really stupid, but I have a question for you." Oh God, what a great start....at this point I can't just keep walking and pretend I didn't hear him.

So what was his question...."Where did you get those boots, they would be great for my Halloween costume." Now, I really like these boots, but the LAST thing I associate them with is Halloween. I have no idea what costume this kid was planning on and why my boots went with his costume.

Is that a complete diss or compliment; I'm really not sure.

AHHH My New Favorite Jam

Now, I'm a fan of most T-Pain jams (obviously) and the occasional Jesse McCartney song....but combine the two and I'm listening. However, this song has a real selling point for me, that hooked me the first time I heard it. Now, anyone who knows me knows just about anything with a French-accent has me sold....if only you could see my decor. During the hook of the song "Body Language" Jesse sings "parlez-vous francais?" and I sold like a kid in a candy store. Interesting though, because this woman/girl must be someone Jesse doesn't know well as he uses the formal. Minor details - Jesse you know this shits on my iPod.

My Guilty Pleasure

I finally figured out my guilty pleasure is....and it's completely dorky. It's Quizno's veggie sub. There is a Quizno's located near my house, but I only visit it about once a month. I've realized that it's some sort of a lame special treat for me. On Friday, I picked up my favorite sub on my way home from work and I got home and was deliriously happy (granted it was Friday, so that helps). But why on earth does a disgusting looking and terrible un-healthy sub make me so happy.....because it's so damn good. On Friday I came to the realization that every time I pick up their sub I enter a complete happy food coma - and it's great.

Also, I like their apparent new slogan....now I couldn't find anything online about this...but the folks at my local Quizno's were rocking some new t-shirts. The slogan on their shirts "Friends don't let friends eat Subway." Now, I'm no Subway-basher but I thought this was hilarious. Clearly they know Subway is the market leader in subs, but the shirts made me laugh. Ah, I'm so easily amused....it's the small things in life.

Movie Review: Law Abiding Citizen

Overall: Action-packed, suspenseful, and original. I would recommend if you like any of the above statements.

At first, you might think by the title I'm going to see a movie about myself (HA....I know - I'm corny). Then if you know what the movie is about you might, wonder why I wanted to see this movie. If you are wondering that, please let me remind you I'm a fan of rap & hip-hop music. Also, I like Jamie Foxx and Leslie Bibb (she's in private practice). While true movie critics weren't a fan....are you surprised? I thought the movie was riveting. Gerard Butler's character is insane, I mean he goes crazy, and it's amazing to watch. Thankfully, the movie has a chance to take the turn towards Saw-esque scences, but it did not. Which made me very happy, as I did not sign up to see that. Although, like any action movie it has a few highly unbelievable scenes - can you really move bomb? Would no one really notice? I don't want to give it all away but more than once I said I don't know about that.

Book Review: "Love Season"

I borrowed "Love Season" by Elin Hilderbrand from a friend, after borrowing a previous book by Erin "Barefoot". "Barefoot" was enjoyable with a surprising ending - at first I thought it was just a book version of "Beaches" (you know..."you are the wind beneath my wings") but a far more cheerful ending. It took me about 3 weeks to actually start "Love Season" (sorry Carrie), I have to be in a reading mood. Once I started it took me about 5 days to complete (note: I have a 3-hour round-trip daily commute), so let's just say I have down time :)

Although, the book left me wanting more....what happened to Miles & Sallie? Do Renata and Dan leave Nantucket or stay with Marguerite? Does Porter really never talk to his niece, and how could he leave Marguerite!? So many questions and I need answers! Does Cade really give up on Renata?

What I loved about the book - was that it all takes place during one very long, hot, summer day - but yet it spans an entire lifetime. The characters were all so intriguing and I could picture them all perfectly in my mind. Also, the book has many a French reference, which will easily win me over.

Overall, I recommend the book and I enjoyed the tiny references to "Barefoot" in the book. During the dinner party, the conversation changed to a mother of three with cancer....hm, what could that be referencing? However, the book left me wanting more...it didn't feel complete to me.

Life lesson learned

Ever do something then think shit, that was stupid? Well I do, and often, then I just chalk it up to a learning experience. This was the case with using a world phone in Antigua. Now, I have experience with world phones from my study abroad days, yes imagine life without a cell phone, then those pay phones come in handy. However, things in the Caribbean most be rigged for "rich tourists" unlike "poor students/backpackers" in Europe. I think to myself "I should call my parents and check-in" well I decide to use the world phone at the dock in Antigua. BAD IDEA.

I made a total of 3 calls - 2 of which went straight to voicemail. This week I learned how much those calls cost me. $41 + change PER CALL!!! Are you kidding me?! This was my first reaction - $120 for a 2 minute call to my parents! First step, call Chase and see what they can do....scored a contact number for this mysterious telecom company. Next, I call the telecom company and explain my situation. Fortunately for me, the representative takes pity on me and tells me since I am a first time user (NOTE: and last time user) they might be able to credit me back. I was able to get $60 back - which was nice. Still the $60 2-minute call to my parents is now my most expensive call ever......life lessons learned.....never use a world phone at a cruise ship port.

So this is what success tastes like....my birthday party for Ryan & Jason over the weekend was a success! This was my first ever...technical dinner party! I created an Italian Cream Cake (three layer cream cake), baked ziti (after some good tips from Doug's grandma), a Marisa-style cheese platter (chipotle cheddar, basil & dill cheddar, and aged gouda), and brushetta.

We had 9 dinner guests (it was a family-affair) and everyone told me what a wonderful meal it was (now, I'm assuming they weren't lying). The cake may have been the biggest hit of the evening....hooray for my potential career in cake-making! And they said I couldn't cook....all a girl needs is some new tools :)

Euforquestra - Soup Album Review

A friend told me download the album 'Soup' by Euforquestra.....I know Eufro-what is your first reaction......euforia + orchestra = Euforquestra (very creative in my humble opinion). The album is free to download here: http://www.euforquestra.com/ so I thought I should at least take a listen. Now, I'm no professional music critic, but I think they have a unique sound. The first song on the track had a reggae vibe, and reminded me very much of my most recent vacation. So I pondered what genre they considered themselves, and their website states "Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk” bringing together Afrobeat, Reggae, Afro-Cuban, Samba, Soca, Funk, Salsa, and Dub. I would definitely agree here, as some tracks have a strong reggae vibe, while others have a salsa vibe.

The cd will definitely keep you awake, so quick, if you are falling asleep at your desk - download it - you'll wake right up. I could see the album being good to listen to while on vacation or spending a day at the beach.

While I was basking in the glory of sun, fun, and being done with wedding planning. My madre was at home and took my most-expensive dress ever bought to the cleaners. Do you know how much they charge to clean a wedding dress? Well this cleaner charged $190 and 3 weeks (really?!) Doesn't that seem like a waste of money? To clean a dress that'll be in a box until I try to force it onto my oldest daughter?

Overall, I feel like a wedding dress is a huge waste of money, yes it's pretty, and traditional, but think about it, what's the hourly rate of that dress? I'm betting $100+/hour saying you put it on around 1 PM and are done with it around 1 AM. The thing is never worn again. Maybe I should put mine on Ebay, I could see some potential takers out there...okay maybe, not. I need a good sales pitch "Gently worn bridal gown...."

I'm back from the Caribbean pale as usual (except for the hidden sunburn on my back)! Some of my favorite comments upon returning home:

"Didn't you go to the Caribbean....I thought you would have more color"

Dear friends....I am albino....we albinos DO NOT tan....again DO NOT tan. If I were to wear absolutely not sunscreen and sit outside all day I would only come home crying and burnt. My burns do not turn into tans....this is a cycle of life for a burn: pain, pain, dry, itch, peel, new skin under the peeled off skin is again albino. Also, I generally hide in lots of sunscreen and sun hats. For those of you who aren't aware pale skin, reddish/blond hair, and many a burn in my younger years....puts me at high risk for skin cancer. So no I did not come home with a beautiful Caribbean tan. Wrong girl folks.

And yes the weather was beautiful and it was hot, hot, hot all week. We visited: St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia (my favorite island), Antigua (the hottest island), and St. Kitts.

Stupid things I do

Yesterday afternoon/evening was the ultimate roller coaster day...down a bridesmaid....up a bridesmaid...dance classes are completed....quick trip to the ER....too much...too much. All after working all day.

T-minus 8 days till I get my normal life back (well, let's be honest it's more like 15 days because we'll be on vacation the week after the wedding - so def not my normal life). Side note: sorry readers, I will not be mobile blogging via Carnival Cruises...I discussed this with T-Mobile, but they wouldn't reduce their mobile fees with Carnival, even if I gave them a shout-out on my blog. I mean do they know how large the following of "Marisa Explains it All" is? Clearly not!

So how did I end up with a quick trip to the ER....bottom line...I am an idiot and I jinx myself. While prepping for the office potluck, (I placed 2nd for best dish - okay it was a 4-way tie & I voted for myself, but hey - what can a girl do) I was in search of a knife that could travel well. Low & behold, I find a knife with it's own safety cover, except the I cannot easily remove the safety cover. Here is where men come in handy, I pass it off to Ryan and say I'm afraid I'm going to cut myself (it's like I can see the future). Ryan shows me how simple it is to take out. I say let me try, I hold the safety lock in my palm and pull the knife out...and cut my palm open....major ouch. I proceed to run into the living room holding my hand very tight so I don't bleed everywhere, while my soon-to-be-husband sits on his ass, thinking I am joking! Let me be clear, I'm never the little boy who cried wolf, I am that stupid, that I would cut myself with a kitchen knife. After yelling my "f-ing hand is bleeding" Ryan realizes I am not joking and I am stupid. Due to the amount of blood we weren't sure if stitches were in order, so we made a quick trip to the Portage ER, to find out stitches weren't needed (woop, woop) only steri strips. An awesome end, to an awesome day.

Tonight was the eagerly anticipated premiere of Gossip Girl. What happened all summer - I couldn't wait to see! I didn't know the girl from Privileged was the new character on Gossip Girl. Talk about upgrade...moving from the barely watched Privileged (now canceled) to Gossip Girl. As far as CW goes, talk about upgrade. Personally, I was excited, as I happened to be one of the few viewers of Privileged, and really liked her character. Sounds like a win for me, the CW, and Joanna Garcia....prime example of one minute your in and the next your out. Her relationship with Nate will be interesting as she is apparently an heiress gone bad and now outside 'the circle of trust'....apparently this is bad in heiress-land.

Other updates.....that secret brother of Dan & Serena is awkward and needs to leave the show. I really don't care and he's just awkward, no one likes an awkward guy. Even more awkward, his kiss with Vanessa, um dear Josh Schwartz, you cannot create chemistry between two people, and it makes for awkward TV. On a side note, nice half-dreads Vanessa, can we please hear about your dread-growing summer?

In other TV news the first 5 minutes of the Grey's Anatomy premiere has hit the webs! AH! It makes me even more excited for the premiere. However, with all the off-season drama is it really a surprise who lives/dies?

I had lots of feedback on topics to post about today. What a busy weekend in Hollywoodland! While teenie-boppers & celebrity-followers alike watched the VMA's Sunday Night I was watching my Packers hurt the Bears :)

Clearly, I missed alot by ignoring the VMA's....thank God for morning radio otherwise I would have missed out on the gossip. The video clip hit youtube just hours after Kanye West made an ass out of himself, and just a few hours later pictures of Kanye drinking heavily during the show also hit the webs. What do I think of Kanye?....well he's a dumbass, but that's nothing new, doesn't he always make an ass out of himself at awards shows? Maybe that's why he is continually invited? Think about all the press the VMA's are getting now as a result. The current rumors floating around are asking whether this was a planned prank by MTV? Could it be, MTV tricking us all? It definitely didn't hurt their ratings, or even more the talk about the VMA's. The only winners I even know about are Beyonce & Taylor Swift. The talk of the town is Kanye, doesn't it seem like that's what he loves? Like a bee to honey....Kanye loves the attention, let's be honest.

Update:Kanye is currently on Jay Leno with crocodile tears about what his Mom would think about last night. YOU ARE A DUMBASS. Your mom would have smacked you upside the head, like everyone else's Mom wanted to do last night.

In other news...'Say Yes to The Dress' is back! Friday premiered one of my favorite new shows! I find this show riveting and I can't put my finger on why. Do you think the girls who go on the show get a portion of their dress paid for by TLC? I'm thinking they do....there is some benefit to them being taped for the show. During the 2 show premiere I felt most for the poor girl with the twin sister, I just wanted to hug her and say F your sister, pick the dress you want! That was a case of 'evil twin' vs. 'nice twin'. Maybe that is why 'evil twin' wasn't getting married, hey honey, no one likes a bitch.

Things that keep me up at night

When I was in college (not that long ago) I could always spot a non-traditional student from a mile away. What was it that gave them away? Their backpack-on-wheels. My question then is WTF is in the bag that you must have wheels it. Also, it snows....alot in Michigan...so how does that work in the winter?

Now, even post-college I still see them damn backpacks-on-wheels only with my fellow train commuters. My question here is WTF are you bringing to work everyday that you need a backpack-on-wheels. Maybe you should cut back? I guess I'm not one to talk, since my purse weighs 10 pounds but, at least its not on wheels.

Another thing that puzzles me, are the people I see daily, who wheel these large crate like briefcases....again what are you bringing to/from work everyday? Do you really need to bring it home every night? Is it that hard to separate yourself for 10 hours a night. I guess the answer here would be yes, it is too hard for some folks. But these are the things that keep me up late at night wondering.

The picture above makes me laugh even harder because not only is it a backpack-on-wheels but it is also a pet porter. However, I am easily amused. That dog is cute though!

Reading Update

This morning on my daily commute I finally started "The Lovely Bones"....bottom line...riveting. I read through chapter 4 this morning and hated putting the book down to head into work. The movie comes out in December (and clearly I'll have the book finished by this Friday). The cast has some real potential to make a great movie. Mark Wahlberg plays the father, interesting casting here, but he has been moving towards more serious roles in the past few years. He is a father of a few kids, so I think that is key in casting. Rachel Weisz is the mother, and clearly she is an amazing actress. Stanley Tucci plays Mr. Harvey, which I am NOT a fan of....I LOVE Stanley Tucci, but the idea of him playing Mr. Harvey weirds me out. I think it'll forever ruin Stanley Tucci for me. The movie is directed by Peter Jackson, which makes me think Lord of The Rings...District 9...easily leads into The Lovely Bones, right??? Anyways, I have faith the movie will be well done with Peter Jackson.

Adventures in auto mechanics

Sunday my sister & I were attempting to return to our parents house only to be delayed by a screw. In her tire! It always amazes me that a small screw can do so much damage. Also, doesn't it seem like this would be a very common occurrence...think of all the screws in the world...the odds must be high right?

Well, good thing this happens to 2 people who can't change a flat and are basically useless. There are things I'm great at: online shopping, bargain hunting (see online shopping), scrapbooking, shopping in general, etc. Things I am not good at: anything to do with an automobile (exclude bargain hunting here), being patient, etc. What's interesting is automobile problems and being patient typically go hand & hand. Again, similar to my automobile problems a few weeks ago thank god for my trusty smartphone. I mean what would a girl do without one? Honestly, I don't understand. First we attempt fix-a-flat, and I purchase my trusty snack foods (pringles and sour patch kids), knowing this could take awhile. Then we decide maybe a tire repair shop is open and could fix it (hoping people are open on Sundays).

Attempt number one: Firestone Tire, they claim they cannot fix the tire now that we have used fix-a-flat. WTF, the can says "See a professional tire repair asap after use". Regardless, they refuse to help and fill the tire with air and we try to think of plan B. My sister's husband, is a fan of Sears, and suggests we go there. After a quick loookup for a number to confirm they are open....we continue our adventure to Sears. Hooray, they say they can in fact repair the tire. While they repair the tire I can venture off to things I am good at....shopping, as Sears is connected to the mall. woohoo! Finally, 4 hours after our original attempt to leave town we are on the road. Things I learned: go to Sears for auto repair, because the mall will entertain you while you wait, don't go to firestone because they can't help repair tires (my Dad pointed out, they will however sell you a new tire), carry fix-a-flat for tire repairs.

I have a pair of beloved Pumas, I wear about 5 times a week (if you see my daily chances are I'm wearing them today). The shoes are about 5-6 years old, and have held up extremely well over the past several years. On the occasional shopping trip I look for a updated version in the stores to buy. I've searched online & online boutiques (RueLaLa, Gilt Groupe, Editor's Choice)....still no luck. Now since they are so old, I don't know the style name anymore and there are no tags in the shoe to help. So what's a girl to do...I can't get rid of my beloved shoes that are finally starting to show their age. Would you get rid of an aging best friend? The shoe repair can't really do much because of where the shoes are starting to wear...so I just need to find a replacement. Yesterday, I decided to email Puma customer service with pictures of the shoe with hopes they can direct me to an updated version of the shoes, or even better somewhere to find the exact same pair. The auto response said I can expect to hear back in the next 48 hours, and I'm so anxious for their response it's like Christmas morning!
Update:Thanks to the friendly people at Puma, I have tracked down my shoes!! Puma Taper SP! Currently out of stock, but I'll keep my eyes out.

Today I was on my morning train to work...exciting as ever. On occasion early in the morning there are a few potential lol's, en route to Chicago. This morning I'm sitting there reading "Barefoot" (side note: good read), and a woman sits down in front of me...and I notice something falling out of her hair. But wait....that's not just anything...that is in fact her weave falling out!! Girl needs to get that checked, but should I have been courteous and mentioned her weave was falling out? "Hi, you don't know me but I was sitting behind you and girl your weave is falling out." Now the last thing I want is to get beat down on the morning commuter train. But I did feel a slight moral obligation to mention to the woman she should in fact check the back of her head/weave.

Dress Shop Drama

In St.Joe/Stevensville there are 2 wedding shops: Alexa Claire Boutique and Wedding Belles. Due my fear of high-pressure sales I opted for Alexa Claire. God, was that the WORST choice ever. I should have known right off the bat to walk away when I walk in after specifically requested Bill Levkoff dresses, and I'm told they don't sell them anymore. After mentioning the only reason I chose this shop was because they sold them, they brought the dresses out. The girls get sized & I think we are all set. A few weeks later the order is soon to be set and 3 of my girls are given dress sizes 4-7 sizes above there normal size. Yes, 4-7 sizes larger no lie, a 16 became a 28. How that happens - I have no idea. A key point here is the fact that my sister ordered her dress another shop and her size was her regular dress size.

After finally instructing the shop to specifically order the sizes the girls & I agreed on, I think we are all set. Flash forward to today....one of my girls picks up her dress and it is the completely wrong size. She was ordered a size that wasn't even put down for her in the system, the same size I instructed them to order. My girl picks up the dress that is at least 7 sizes larger than what she wears. Obviously, I am slightly annoyed after having several bumps in the road, they still can't get the order right. I call the shop and ask them to makeup for their mistake, and they let me know that it should all be fine with a good seamstress. Now, yes it will be fine because we have a great seamstress, but your dress shop is still incompetent, and should makeup for your large error. But she refuses to makeup for their error. Well thank the Lord we have social media, because I want everyone to know never to order from their shop in Kalamazoo or Saint Joe, unless you are a bride looking for additional stress. How can a business now be willing to makeup for their mistake? Even after someone calls and asks them to makeup for their mistake, a 10% discount can go a long way these days.

Northern Adventures

This weekend was the combined family trip...my family + the fiance's family...at the cottage for the entire weekend. Now, this had potential to be not fun I mean think about it. However, despite the rain, potential family awkwardness, and cold weather - I pulled through with some solid good times. Saturday turned into a shopping/golf day depending on your gender....clearly you can tell which gender chose shopping. Never one to miss a shopping trip I'm now up a swimsuit & running pants...big scores I know. Possibly the best find were the michigan-shaped cookie cutters...of course, I bought them. Don't worry those are definitely coming in for the next office potluck...solid.

Dancing queen

Last night was my triumphant return to the dance floor. New steps & a new day. Last night we learned the inside turn, to add onto the outside turn and the basic step. Eventually it's supposed to all come together into lots of turns and movements - that I'm not sure I can keep up with. My dancing partner wasn't quite Fred Astaire last night and had difficultly mastering the different turns. However, ever the champion I survived and mastered both the inside & outside turn. The tables have turned in our dance lessons and there is a new master of the dance floor. The cougar was caged last night, as her young prodigy wasn't able to master his steps. For the fear of jinxing my new found dancing skills, I will shy away from gloating about my turning abilities. Ryan still has me schooled on his ability to keep with the beat, I like to think I'm in my own dancing world and the music just can't keep up. :)

My wedding is 32 days and counting. Soon I'll be a whole new person....well, at least on paper. Obviously with 32 days left most of my details are finalized....so what am I still working on? Hair styles, and clearly I'm going for the updo-style with floral accents. To easily compare my top choices I pulled together a nice photo of them all. The current front runner is the top-middle option, although I also like the top-right (bottom-right is the same hair style from the front).

Most people will say, they definitely don’t have all the luck; but sometimes I will be going about my normal day and think this truly is me. It’s even more interesting when someone else calls you out on your extreme bad luck. Sometimes I think I am truly immune to my severe malchance, and just imagine a cute little French man saying “quelle malchance!”. Yesterday was my grand departure from the mitten state (home state), and I set off first to get gasoline then continue my venture home. Well, too bad the Alero decides she wants to stay in the mitten state a little while longer. After filling up her 13-gallon tank to head home she won’t start. Which is amazing because she just made it to the gas station perfectly fine. Now, as a frequent sufferer of malchance - I keep my smartphone as a trusty sidekick. After a quick phone call to the old man to inform him Alley was out of commission, I Google “Alero won’t start”. Top results: dead battery (not the case here), Passlock security issue, etc. I fell into the Passlock security issue…. which can be fixed by getting the ignition switch fixed ($$$) or patiently waiting in the “On” position 10 minutes and restarting. Now let me debate here between waiting 10 minutes or calling the nearest tow facility, waiting for them to arrive, they haul my Alley off, I'm sans a vehicle, then pay $$$ to get it repaired. Clearly, I chose the former.

My Monday starts off like a typical Monday…except…en route to the train station my ‘Service Engine Soon’ light turns & stays on…FML. Next, arrive at the train station “We are currently experiencing indefinite delays ahead”….FML. A girl just can’t win. I board my train with the car manual in tow, since I’ll have extra time today to diagnose the new problem with Alley. During my train ride this morning I came up with some potential fixes for the ‘Service Engine Soon’ light, which I’m hoping to repair instead of my local GM dealer…we shall see who wins this round my friend Alley or me...

Project Runway was back Thursday after a year-long hiatus...(it was about damn time). According to Nielsen so the show debuted with 4.2 million viewers...sounds like I wasn't the only person waiting over a year for the damn show.

Looks like this season has a few real characters too...Johnny the former meth-addict. After having an emotional breakout about 15 minutes into the show; Tim steps in to give him the old pep talk. It was quite awkward to watch a grown man start crying on tv, because he wasn't sure his dress was worthy enough. I'm thinking currently in rehab + stress from project runway = not good for the former meth-addict, but great for ratings. Then we have Ari, who would have been an interesting addition to the show. With her indie spirit and f-you pret-a-porter attitude, her designs would have surely got some interesting opinions from middle America. A potential favorite might be Christopher, who didn't attend fashion school yet won the first challenge. P.S. where can I buy that dress because I would definitely wear that to a holiday party or something. Then there is Mitchell, who is even more interesting to me because my friend Erick knows him! Mitchell barely made it past the first episode, and it will be interesting to see how long he lasts. Heidi and Nina definitely did not love his sheer nightgown for the red-carpet event.

The opening of show made me think WTF Heidi with the severe bun sitting on top of her head. Too much Heidi....too much.

Mad Men is back!

Sunday was the premiere of one show that became a fast favorite of mine last season.... Mad Men. The show started out rough, with an apparent flashback to Don's childhood. This is interesting because he wasn't present for his own birth. So how does know that his Dad slept with a shall we say, 'lady of the night', right after his 'Mom' lost a baby. He clearly wasn't able to witness this chain of events. During the flashback you see his apparently adoptive mother endure labor, only to have a stillborn. My question here was it necessary to show the stillborn child? That was a bit much for me....this isn't A&E's next medical mysteries show. All this relates back to Don and Betty's soon to arrive 3rd child.....

This season is supposed to focus on Don being a better father and husband, quite out of his character from what I have seen. I assume the opening scene is supposed to show he was a cad just like his father. However, if the season is supposed to focus on him being a
better father then why does he sleep with a stewardess? Thus far no moral improvements in Don’s character. I found it amusing that Betty didn't question where the TWA wings came from, typically she’s quite quick. You know if I was Betty, I'd sure be asking who joined the 'mile high' club for those wings.

I was surprised how confident Jane’s character had turned. She was running the office - which will make her interesting to watch. Will she really leave the office once she is married? If so, her character would clearly be leaving the show. I am watching for the wedding to get canceled and she will remain in the office and on the show. Even better, maybe she'll join the soon to rise up feminist movement and work while married! Shocking, I know. Her character is an integral part of the show, and would be difficult to
write off after only 3 seasons.

Tonight another one of my favorite shows returns after a extremely long hiatus.......Project Runway. Now last season was decent but we need someone to watch! Christian in season 4 was great because he was entertaining and talented. Can anyone else name winners of the show? There has been buzz the show will be different because it’s on Lifetime. Please, I don't care what channel the show is on as long as my friends at my local cable provider have the channel.

Last night, was the second dance lesson for the fiancé and I….key point here – I was dreading going. After the first lesson and paying to get yelled at by the female instructor, I knew round 2 wouldn’t be much better. The first half hour of the last night’s lesson involved me being instructed to practice ball, heel, ball, heel on the ballet bar. Hearing “Marisa…ball, heel, ball, heel makes me feel like a dog….almost as if it’s “fetch Marisa…ball…now heel.” I just can’t keep up.

Now, let me point out that I am NOT a dancer – I don’t know my foot from my arm – and the instructor has no qualms about calling me out here. The fiancé is no help here, as he is evidently the next Fred Astaire – where this comes from – I don’t know….supposedly it was due to his many years in high school band. If only I would have kept up with that damn clarinet. How does a band geek equate to the next 'Dancing with the Stars' guru anyways? Something tells me that the instructor has a thing for younger men and teaching private lessons is her personal cougar hunting ground – I’ve seen her winking at Ryan while yelling ball, heel, ball, heel at me. Maybe she is trying to distract me with ball & heel while stealing away my fiancé. The end of the lesson finally comes around and while Ryan gets 2 thumbs up & a round of applause, I get a “keep practicing”. Remind me again why I’m paying to get yelled by a broad trying to steal my boo. Next Tuesday is dance lesson number 3, guess I bet get my dancing shoes on in the meantime.

As mentioned this morning it was no surprise my man Brett was headed for the purple & yellow. I think was what more surprising to me was how was the Vikings updated their landing page. Very impressive....golf clap. Suddenly their season has become a "historic season", one I wish I could attend, unfortunately those November 1st tickets at $260 a pop are beyond my price point. Sounds like a viewing party at my house.

Brett Favre Back?

By the name of my blog I am obviously a Green Bay Packers fan, so what
is my opinion of Brett Favre? Well, when he played for the packers he
was basically the second coming of god. When he played for the jets it
was like losing a friend. But I still was a fan. Obviously a Packers
fan first though.

Now the rumor mill is stirring again because of Jay Glazer's recent
revelation that several Vikings sources believe Brett is secretly
back. I wouldn't doubt it, but doesn't it create a lot of talk around
a team that no one outside Peterson-lovers and Minnesota-dwellers care
about. It reminds me of the recent revelation that Kourtney Kardashian
is pregnant, which coincided with the launch of her show. Perfect
timing or planned timing, I would guess planned timing.

Now the Packers play the Vikings at home on November 1st. You can bet
your ass I will be there to see my former idol throw the ball in one
of the most storied football stadiums in the country. Will I be
wearing my #4 jersey? Most likely not, these days I rock the #85
jersey with pride. One of WMU's most famous alumni, who was drafted to
my team, on my birthday, it was meant to be.

Do I fear that Favre goes to play for the Vikings and will hurt the
Packers playoff chances? No, we all saw the depressing end to the Jets
season last year........someone isn't Mr. Clutch anymore. Now Rodgers
isn't exactly clutch either, Kyra Sedgwick definitely has 'The Closer'
locked down more than Rodgers. However, Rodgers still has time to
improve, while Favre is running out of time. Although, I know a few
people in Chicago, who firmly believe I should worry about Jay Cutler.
Time will tell friends.

Time Traveler's Wife Movie Review

Yesterday was the day I had waiting for....to finally see 'Time Traveler's Wife'. Now, I wasn't as disappointed as I was with 'My Sister's Keeper' but there were some points in the film that were lacking.

First, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams while well-casted, the makeup artist was not well-casted. Now, a key point here is that Brad Pitt produced this film, which has some similar themes as Ben Button, with the lifelong love affair. Brad Pitt had an extremely well-casted makeup artist in 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', now I would think maybe we would have hired the same one for this movie, which requires an actor to age from scene-to-scence. However, that did not happen, Eric Bana looks the same throughout the film aside from a hair cut. Rachel McAdams looks exactly the same. Now we are only looking at about a 20-year age range from mid-20's to mid-40's, but still will I look the same when I'm 43 - God, I hope so.

Second, the movie seemed hard to follow for non-book readers in the audience. Trust me, there were a few, like the girls behind me, who were obviously not the brightest lights on the Christmas trees. They voiced a few times they had trouble following and had no idea what was going on. While this may be attributed to their IQ's, it may also be due to the film quickly skipping through a romance. I highly recommend reading the book before the movie here.
